Description
Hoodoos and rock spires form in dry landscapes subject to freezing overnight temperatures. Water that has percolated into the rock expands as it freezes, gradually chipping away at the structure, leaving behind pillars, cliffs, arches and hoodoos.
This limestone tower is tinted orange by iron oxide. I found this formation in Red Canyon, part of Dixie National Forest located in southern Utah.
