Description
Urnes Stavkyrkje (Stave Church) is an UNESCO World Heritage listed timber church sited in the village of Ornes on Lustrafjorden, Norway.
The current church dates from the 12th century, and is at least the third church built on this site. The timber is coated with a tar and charcoal paint which both preserves the wood and generates a resinous atmosphere inside the building.
The north portal of the church is decorated with elaborate carvings of snakes and dragons entwined with vines, harking back to Norse pagan mythology.
