Artist's Description
The purple swamphen (or swamp-hen) (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a native Australian waterbird found along the eastern coast. Outlying populations can also be found in New Zealand where they are known as Pukeko. The Purple Swamphen is about the same size as a domestic chicken, but unlike the chicken they are proficient flyers and swimmers.
