Description
The stark white sand dunes found in the Tularosa basin of southern New Mexico.
These dunes are comprised primarily of gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) trapped when streams flowed into the valley, found no outlet to the sea, and evaporated in the desert heat.
The area is partly protected as the White Sands National Monument. The wind flowing over the dunes sculpts small ripples into its surface.
