Artist's Description

The Short Beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) is a monotreme (egg laying mammal) found across Australia and in parts of New Guinea.

Echidnas are about 30-45 cm in length and weigh between 3 - 7 kg. They are covered with a mixture of fur and spines. Their diet consists mainly of ants and termites; hence their common name of “spiny ant eaters”.

This animal is of the subspecies Setosus, found in Tasmania and the islands of Bass Straight.
