An adult female American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) warming itself on the riverbank.
American alligators can be found in the freshwater and brackish wetlands of the southern states of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. Adults can grow to 4 metres in length and weigh up to 400 kg. I came across this one in the Bayou Teche region of southern Louisiana.
