Description
The Lithgow Blast Furnace operated from the 1870s to the 1920s. At its height the furnace produced over 100,000 tonnes of iron and steel per year. Operations were closed in the 1920s and moved to the present site of Port Kembla near Wollongong. The ruins currently visible date from the 1900s. This photograph shows the view toward the main pump house from the north. A few plants are managing to eke out a living in the cracks amongst the debris.
