Description
White Island (Whakaari) is an active volcano located 50 km off the eastern coast of New Zealand's north island in the Bay of Plenty.
The volcano rises 1600m from the sea floor, but only the top 300m rises above the waves.
A sulphur mine was operational on the island from the 1880s until destroyed by an eruption in 1914.

Incredibly awesome image Nicholas. Terrific exposure and great overview of one of nature's most damaging global structures. This is an image to treasure. Stand back. It may come alive again soon! Congratulations, cheers, georgia
