Description
A crimson evening sky overlooks the white sand dunes of the Tularosa basin in New Mexico.
These dunes are comprised primarily of gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) trapped when streams flowed into the valley, found no outlet to the sea, and evaporated in the desert heat. The area is partly protected as the White Sands National Monument.
