Description
Three famous bridges crossing the Firth of Forth, Queensferry, Scotland.
The rearmost of the three is the Forth Rail Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge. The rail bridge was opened in 1890 and for 30 years held the title as the world’s longest cantilever span bridge. The bridge carries rail traffic and was recently listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Forth Road Bridge, a steel framed suspension bridge, opened in 1964. It carried general road traffic until replaced by the newer Queensferry Crossing. It is now reserved for public transport crossings.
The newest of the three, the Queensferry Crossing, is a three-tower cable stayed bridge. It was opened in 2017 and now carries road traffic across the Forth.
