Description
A traditional teahouse in the Japanese gardens at Cowra, New South Wales. These gardens were constructed in 1979 by renowned landscape designer Ken Nakajima, and are modelled on the very first Japanese landscape garden built in Edo (now Tokyo) in the 16th century.
The Japanese connection to Cowra dates to World War 2, when the town hosted a large prisoner of war camp for Japanese and southern European (mostly Italian) prisoners of war. The respect shown by local ex-servicemen to the graves of Japanese prisoners who died in captivity and during a notorious mass escape attempt (August 1944) sparked reconciliation between the two countries, and these gardens are a powerful symbol of this good will.
