Rich red cliff faces in the central sections of the Grand Canyon, Arizona.
Layers of sedimentary limestone, sandstone and shale, many tinted deep red by iron, overlay the darker and harder granite and schist of the inner canyon. The arid climate has left the canyon walls largely bare from vegetation and visible in all their glory.
