Description
Volcanic plugs are formed when magma in the throat of a volcano solidifies in place forming a hard granite mass. Over millions of years the softer surrounding rock erodes leaving only the hard, resilient core.
I photographed this one in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand's North Island.
