Description
Mount Cook as seen from the south across Lake Pukaki.
At over 12,200 feet, Mount Cook is the highest peak in New Zealand. It is located in the centre of the South Island on the border of West Coast and Canterbury Provinces. The three separate peaks that grace the summit can be seen clearly in this photograph.
The ultra-clear air and the absence of foothills makes the mountains appear to rear straight up from the plains and makes distances difficult to gauge. This photograph shows the mountain from more than 40 km away. Even Lake Pukaki in the foreground is more than 15 km long.
The turquoise colour of the water is caused by glacial flour (suspended particles of rock) washed into the lake from the upstream glaciers.
