Description
Kilnave Chapel and Kilnave Cross near Loch Gruinart, Islay.
Kilnave Chapel (Cill Naoimh) dates from the 14th century AD, and may have served as a monastery before becoming a parish church. The chapel was the scene of the 1598 Battle of Traigh Ghruinneart (Battle of Gruinart Strand). At the conclusion of the battle a party of 30 men sought sanctuary from their enemies inside the chapel. The building was deliberately set on fire, trapping and killing those inside. Since this act of murder and desecration the building has remained a ruin.
The famous Kilnave Cross dating from the 7th or 8th century AD stands proud near the chapel entrance.
