Description
View of the old station and entrance to one of the abandoned railway tunnels at Helensburgh, just south of Sydney.
The tunnel was part of the Illawarra railway line until 1915 when a new two-track tunnel was opened a short distance away and the station was moved to suit. This is just one of a series of abandoned tunnels in the vicinity. In the intervening years the forest has moved in to reclaim its rightful place.
The high humidity of the environment coupled with the sudden drop in temperature when you head underground generates thick mist inside the tunnel, making it difficult to see more than a few metres ahead. With the right airflow eerie shapes and low moans can be experienced, making this a ghost hunters dream location.
