An aerial view of the neve and top section of the Franz Joseph Glacier, located on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. The surface is riddled with crevasses.
Franz Joseph Glacier drains the western slopes of Mount Cook (Aoraki). This area receives about 40m (130 feet) of snow each year feeding numerous glaciers. The glacier descends over 2500 metres to terminate in temperate rainforest less than 300 metres above sea level.
