Devil's Tower, located in eastern Wyoming, is a volcanic plug of granite, formed when magma cooled in the throat of a volcano. Over millions of years the surrounding softer rock has eroded leaving only the hard, resilient core.
This is a location that has fascinated me since I first saw it as a young boy in the Spielberg movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was a thrill to finally visit it many years later.
A colour version of this photograph is also available.
