Double rainbows are relatively common but I had never seen a triple until I shot this one. The faintest of the three lies inside the main bow.
I photographed this triple (or can I see four bows?) on the eastern coast of New Zealand's north island when a break in the clouds allowed the sun to shine into the midst of a storm.
The bands inside the main bow are known as supernumerary rainbows or supernumerary bands, and are caused by the interference of light rays as they pass through the raindrops. Their colours are more subdued than in the main bow.
I am a photographer based in Sydney, Australia. I shoot mostly landscapes but include the occasional urban, flora and fauna shots for good measure. My photographs in these collections were taken in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Iceland and USA. Please note that watermarks do not appear on printed images.
