Description
The stark white sand dunes contrast strongly with the steel-blue overcast sky of the Tularosa basin in New Mexico.
These dunes are comprised primarily of gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) trapped when streams flowed into the valley, found no outlet to the sea, and evaporated in the desert heat. A soap tree yucca (yucca elata) is one of the few plants hardy enough to survive in this environment of constantly shifting sand dunes.
