Description
Pillars of tufa (calcium carbonate) glow in the early morning desert sunshine.
Tufa is formed when calcium carbonate (limestone) from hot springs precipitates out of solution. These pillars are located near the town of Lee Vining in the high desert of eastern California. Although originally formed underwater, these ones are now stranded high and dry as the water level of nearby Mono Lake has gradually receded.
