Description
The Cave of Smoo (or Smoo Cave as it is more commonly known) is located on the north coast of Sutherland, Scotland, near the village of Durness. Its name is derived from the old Norse word for hole or hiding place.
The cave is the largest sea cave in Great Britain. It combines a river cave carved by a freshwater stream Allt Smoo, and a sea cave eroded by waves. The sea cave entrance is now raised above the water line through the action of isostatic rebound.
This photograph shows one of the inner chambers with a sinkhole through which the Smoo Burn enters as a waterfall following heavy rain.
