Description
Crystals of pure sulphur are growing at the outlet of this fumarole.
Fumaroles are vents that emit gases such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide and steam. The sulphur crystals precipitate and grow as the hot volcanic gases meet the cooler air at the earth's surface.
I photographed this fumarole near Taupo in New Zealand's North Island. Taupo is at the heart of one of the world's most active volcanic areas.
