A White Faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) contemplating life on the banks of a river in Sydney.
The white faced heron is a water bird found in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia and New Zealand. They frequent wetlands, swamps, rivers and coastal mudflats, seeking fish or insects for their diet. Adults are about 60-70 cm (2 feet) tall and have blue-grey plumage, yellow legs and a white face.
