Description
A high-key style portrait of a Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio).
The Purple Swamphen is a waterbird found along the east coast of Australia and in the north island of New Zealand (where they are known as Pukekos). As suggested by their name they inhabit swamps and marshlands, nesting in reed beds. They are from the rail family and are closely related to other types of swamphens found in western Europe and north Africa. Adults are roughly the size of a large chicken.
