Description
These oddly shaded clouds are known as mammatus, named for their pendulous shape reminiscent of hanging breasts or udders.
They form under the base of particularly intense storm clouds when cold descending air mixes with warm rising air, forming cell like pockets. The cells are normally composed of ice rather than water.
Mammatus clouds are relatively uncommon, requiring an unique combination of factors to form.
