Description
The Kilnave Cross overlooking Loch Gruinart on Islay in the southern Hebrides.
The Kilnave Cross is an ancient slate cross standing adjacent to the chapel of the same name. The cross pre-dates the chapel by several hundred years, with estimates ranging from the 5th to 8th centuries AD, and a most likely date of the 7th century AD. The cross is extremely thin and heavily weathered, making it almost impossible to see the remaining carvings. Wear and tear has left the remaining sections somewhat resembling a man with bent arms, or perhaps a scarecrow.
