Description
Waiotapu is located in the heart of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in the North Island of New Zealand. Geothermal features such as hot springs, geysers and mud pools abound.
The Champagne pool receives its name from the streams of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide bubbles that are constantly rising through its waters.
The waters are heated by volcanic activity to a scalding 75C at the surface. The bright orange colour is caused by toxic arsenic and antimony compounds that precipitate from the waters. The air is constantly filled with rising steam, rich with the smell of sulphur.
