Description
A close-up view of the fluted columns of granite that form the structure of Devils Tower in north east Wyoming.
Devils Tower is a volcanic plug of granite, formed when magma cooled in the throat of a volcano. The regular shape of the pillars arises from the slow cooling and shrinking of the magma. Over millions of years the surrounding softer rock has eroded leaving only the hard, resilient core.
