Description
The enormous buttressed roots of the Moreton Bay Fig Tree (Ficus macrophylla).
The Moreton Bay Fig (or Australian Banyan) grows along the east coast of Australia from the tropics through to the northern end of the temperate zone. Mature specimens can reach heights of up to 60 metres with canopies 50 metres wide. The tremendous weight of the tree is supported by a thick trunk, widely spreading buttressed roots, and in mature specimens, aerial roots that form additional trunks when they reach the ground.
