Description
An Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo Azurea) taking a break on some reeds.
Azure kingfishers are found in creeks and mangroves in eastern and northern Australia. They wait patiently on a branch or other high vantage point then swoop down to ambush their prey.
Adult kingfishers are between 16-19 cm and feature a long, pointed bill, cobalt blue wings, orange breast and white neck.

LOVE this photo of the Azure! I keep ending up in Australia at the wrong time for the Azures. Am curious where (Queensland?) and when this was taken. Perhaps I'll have better luck on my next visit. ;-)
Nicholas Blackwell replied:
Thanks Pamela. This photograph was taken in western New South Wales in late July. Kingfishers are found all along the east coast and up into the northern tropics. It's not a bird I was specifically looking for this day; I was just lucky to have come across a couple of them fishing in a reed bed next to a small lake.
